Age: 43
Level 2 UK Athletics Group Event Coach
Certificate in Sports and Exercise, BTech Higher in Running.
Qualified: September 2004
Editor of the Newsletter

I start running when I was 9 (and I am pretty tired now!). I won my first 800m race at the grand old age of 9½ and thought it was so nice I continued racing and training until I was 18, unfortunately that was my one and only school win.

During my early years I ran for my, School, and for the Warwickshire Schools Cross Country and Athletics Team.  I then had a couple of year at University where I slobbed about and did very little competitive running.  L

I am now fitter, leaner and once again I enjoy running.  I compete in most distances up to the marathon and love the buzz of racing.  I took up coaching to pass on my knowledge and experience and I like to think that I have helped others to improve their running.  I regularly take the session on a Tuesday and Thursday (when I’m not racing at the weekend).  My aim is to help as many Striders as possible to enjoy and improve their running, to introduce them to interval training and to nurture a compulsive desire to enjoy their running and to have fun.  To me success is seeing a runner week after week and year after year down the club smiling. J

I also run for Luton AC on the Track and compete over distances 800m, 1500m and 5k, and when the team is short I do the Discus, Shot, Long Jump, Javelin, and have been known to do the Pole Vault, Steeplechase and 100m, 200m and 400m.

In 2004 and 2005 I won the Bedfordshire M40 Cross Championship title (I was born in Bedford) and the 2005 Bedfordshire M40 5 mile road race and in 2006 I was the M40 Road Grand Prix Essex Champion.  I am presently studying for my Level 3 UKA coaches’ award.

I started running in August 2003 because I decided I wanted to become fitter. After giving up football in 1996 I had become very dormant and needed to loose weight. With the help of running and sensible eating I lost 3 stone in as many months, which is when I joined  "the striders" after running their 10k road race. In the last 3 years I have completed over 60 marathons and I have just returned from completing the 2007 Marathon Des Sables which is a 150mile foot race across the Sahara Desert and also regularly competing in Ultra distance events between 28 and 200 miles I am also halfway through an 18 month process to reach Level 3 status in my coaching.

JUNIOR ATHLETICS COACH

I am the junior athletics coach for 11 – 15 year olds at Billericay Striders. I also work as a Personal Trainer and Class Instructor for David Lloyds Limited. As part of my class instruction I run Spin and circuits classes for 11 – 15 year olds. Whilst doing my coaching exams I also worked for Megasports supervising sports and games for juniors

In July 2006 I took the National Academy of Sports Medicine Qualification, for Junior Athletics which is a REPS registered qualification.

The Tuesday night sessions I coach for our mixed ability group include steady runs, intervals, hill training and sprints. As a group we participate in local races (this is encouraged as opposed to being compulsory) and recently won the team event at the annual Brentwood 3 mile race. The group is friendly and all abilities are encouraged.

My own running background started at the age of 11 and as a junior I competed for my local club, school and borough. As a senior I have run under the hour for ten miles and under 3 hours for the marathon and have twice been the clubs cross country champion.

I am at the club on Tuesday nights from about 6.50PM if you are interested come down the club and try a session.

I started running in November 2002 because I decided I wanted to run a marathon. My main sport was rugby; I stopped playing rugby after an injury in 1998.

My first run was a 10K, in which I came last. I completed my first London marathon in 5:30ish hours.

Over the years, my timings got better but not great. Earlier this year I decided to put something back into the club and enrolled on both CiA and Level 1 UK Athletics Coaching courses.

My plan is to focus on endurance running ‘Marathon Training’ which I hope to start after my Level 2 UK Athletics Coaching course later this year.

Since joining the striders I have completed 5 London Marathons and 1 in Paris and Dublin.

My other passion in sport is triathlons which I have just started this season; I am a member of Tri-sport Epping, and am shortly starting my Triathlon Level One coaching course.

Lives in: Billericay

Married with 2 children (16 & 14)

UK Athletics Coach Level 1 (Full Police check undertaken in 2006)

Essex AAA U13 Girls Track & Field Team Manager

I have been a member of the Striders since 2001 and used to race regularly until a persistent injury and work commitments curtailed my activity.  I have run marathons in London, Chicago & Boston but would say my best distance was the half marathon running a PB of 83 minutes in 2005.  Through my daughter, I was introduced to assisting with the coaching at Chelmsford AC and thoroughly enjoyed working with the 10-12 year old age group. I became the Essex U13 Girls Team Manager in 2005 and last year saw us win the Southern Inter-Counties match in Kingston, Surrey.  Essex contains some hugely talented youngsters and it is a pleasure to watch them compete against the best in the South of England.  Outside of athletics I coach the Intersports U17 football team and regularly run the line during their matches as well.

My Profile

As many of you will know I used to race on a regular basis until a couple of years ago and along with Nigel Burvill we were the only two striders to do handicap in less than 15 mins. Both of us were vets at the time and it was a number of years before the likes of Jamie and Crispian stole our thunder. I have been second twice in the cross country championship to John Barber and Ian Budge in successive years and have ran the marathon many times

What few of you will know, I came from a strong competitive cycling background and held club records as a schoolboy and was 4th in the eastern counties area at the same time (which covers many counties). I still retain a link with the Essex Roads Cycling Club, which I joined way back in 1973!

In 2006 I took a redundancy package from my long term employer and am now a fully qualified Personal trainer and Sports Masseuse as well as holding a certificate in nutrition. My intention is to use these skills on a limited basis and feel having been competitive in two large disciplines I offer a wealth of knowledge. In addition I did a level 1 coaching course, but felt that doing the premier course that I an Geraldine have completed gave a better understanding of the physical side of exercise and my experience in competition compliments it.

I recommend anyone should check the register of exercise professions and clarify what their trainers experience is rather than from someone with no formal qualifications.
